Good book, on the ggis, and the first book I’ve read all the way through in Catalan I’ve read bits and pieces of other books of Pla’s and a story or two by other writers.
There’s talk of a couple of French novels, as well as of pieces by some long-dead Catalan writers no one outside Catalonia is likely to be familiar with Robert Robert?

His liberal-conservative thought, skeptic and uncompromising, filled with irony and eel sense, keeps sounding contemporary, completely current, even though it seems to contradict the current cultural establishment same as it did with its completely opposed antecessor.
For every bit that was funny, or engaging, or lovely sounding, there is a lot of gria and X and things that I had no particular interest in.

And what better world for a writer to describe than the world he knows best? Apparently a classic since so few writers have written in the Catalonian language. Some of the sketches go longer than necessary, but others are enriched with great descriptive flourishes as well as Pla’s opinions on contemporary philosophers, writers, and poets.
Ostensibly a diary of a young man finishing, unwillingly and unhappily, his law degree and, more happily and enthusiastically, starting a career as a writer, Pla really worked on The Gray Notebook for over 40 years and only published in much later in life, reworked but not still in the form of a daily journal that makes it such an interesting and hard to explain work.
